Man, this movie is SO worth your time.
When huge musicians go on tours around the world, it’s never just them on stage. They have backup musicians from drummers to piano players to back up singers to guitar players to anything else you can think of helping them play for huge crowds.
The documentary Sidemen: Long Road to Glory, directed by Scott Rosenbaum along with producer Jasin Cadic, shows the life of three absolutely incredible musicians who you probably haven’t ever heard of before.
The famed piano player Pinetop Perkins, drummer Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith, and guitarist Hubert Sumlin were all sidemen for Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf back in the days of blues and rock and roll.
We got the chance to chat with the minds behind the doc while at SXSW and the conversation was enlightening and you really could tell how much they cared about their three subjects.
Check out the part 1 above and part 2 below to learn all about the film, challenges they faced recording interviews, snagging Marc Maron to narrate, and SO much more!
Sidemen: Long Road to Glory has its last screening at SXSW tomorrow, Saturday March 19th, at 1:45PM at the Topfer Theatre in Austin, TX.
